London, 27 March, 2012 – A unique development called Sportyfunder, the brainchild of the Angel Finance Group in the UK, is being used to involve local communities in their own sports projects with financial backing using a crowd funding platform. The idea is a novel way of outsourcing financial backing for local sports groups by putting athletes in need of backing into touch with sporting enthusiasts. Involvement in the process is open to everyone and is available on a worldwide scale. To request funding, a local group need only log on to the site and complete an application with their pitch for funds. Ease of use is guaranteed, as there is no strict format for the pitch; applicants may send video, audio or textual messages (not SMS) with their details. Financial backers then pledge small sums of money and the funding is completed when the applicant’s chosen target is met.

As much of the idea works on the generosity of sports lovers who wish to give towards a community cause that speaks to them, the benefit to the financial backer may be anything as simple as free tickets to a community event or a personalised souvenir.

Sports funding provided by backers is confidential, so the amount of support a backer provides remains undisclosed, with an upper limit of £10,000.

Sports draws communities together and has benefits well beyond the individual which include a growing sense of pride in community, lower crime rates, and better business networking and addresses some of society’s key challenges, such as social inclusion, health, education and inequalities. The most popular local sport is football, and in recognition of this Sportyfunder has developed a sister project called Footiefunder for those fans.

The homepage of the Sportyfunder website reveals an array of different sports with anything from Angling to Yoga, so it is not just focused on traditional sports. Overall there are approx. 100 sporting categories available for funding.

About Sportyfunder

The aim of Sportyfunder is to discover sporting talent and create opportunities for local community sports projects. It raises funds focused on sports only. Sportyfunder.com is a global network – sports projects posted in one location may be backed by financiers in a different country.
